Achievements of young brass musicians recognised by Provost

A civic reception was held for the players and committee members of the Carnoustie and District Youth Brass Band at the Municipal Buildings in Forfar on Friday night, 4th June. Provost Ruth Leslie-Melville who has been a great supporter of the band praised the players for their hard work and dedication which led to the band winning the Advanced Section at the British Youth Brass Band Championships in Manchester a few weeks ago.

The band which has only been formed for the past three years is made up of forty two players aged between 13 and 19 years who come from various towns throughout Angus. Provost Leslie-Melville in her address to the assembled guests highlighted the progress that the band had made winning 4th, 2nd and now 1st place over the past three years in the Championships as well as being crowned Scottish Youth Champions this season.

She also praised the hard work of the tutors and committee and particularly the efforts of Mr. Michael Robertson who teaches all the brass players in the band. Provost Leslie-Melville, who was joined by several of the Angus Councillors and Mr. Neil Logue, the acting Director of Education in Angus, told the young players that they were a credit to their parents and great ambassadors for Angus.

Mr Bryan Knight, who is chair of the organising committee, replied on behalf of the band and thanked the Provost for her kind invitation and hospitality. Mr. Knight recognised the positive contribution that Angus Council and local businesses had made to the band and expressed his gratitude to the various communities of Angus who have supported the band. Mr. Knight said, “We have something special in Angus and to win such a prestigious title is outstanding. There seems to be a conveyor belt of brilliant young musicians being produced in the county and Mr. Robertson obviously has the recipe for success.”
